Minh Nguyen Earns Summer Saver In World Series Of Poker Closer Event

One of the last events of the 2022 World Series of Poker wrapped up Monday night at Bally’s on the Las Vegas Strip, appropriately called The Closer.

The $1,500 no-limit tournament drew a field of 2,039, which created an overall prize pool of $3,962,280. After two starting flights and three days of play, the title and the $536,280 first-place prize went to New Jersey poker pro Minh Nguyen.

Many had entered this event with the hopes of saving their summers, and Nguyen was no different, earning the biggest score of his career at the best possible time.

“It was a rough start for the series,” Nguyen told WSOP reporters. “I was 0-5 before I min-cashed one, then I went 0-26. I’ve actually been on a year-and-a-half downswing. For me to come this far in the last tournament of the series is a dream. It’s awesome!”

Nguyen entered the final day as the chip leader and never took his foot off the gas, scoring several knockouts along the way. He even scored a double elimination during four-handed play, taking out Madelyn Carr in fourth place and Michael Liang in third.

He entered heads-up play with South Africa’s Ahmed Karrim nearly even in chips. The two players traded chips for a bit before Karrim ran a semi-bluff right into Nguyen’s straight. Karrim settled for $331,470 as the runner-up.

Notables who made a deep run in the tournament included Chris Moorman (14th), Ian Steinman (23rd), Shaun Deeb (30th), Jonathan Dokler (34th), Barry Hutter (42nd), and Brett Shaffer (45th).
