Canada’s “GoProWarrior” caused a major upset in the latest GGPoker Super MILLION$ by defeating Swedish online poker legend Niklas Astedt heads-up, denying Astedt a record sixth Super MILLION$ title. The victory came with $319,438, while Astedt added another $249,467 to his lifetime winnings.
GGPoker Super MILLION$ Final Table Results
|9||Ronan “Kakonkote” Sweeney||Ireland||$44,198|
Irish star Ronan “Kakonkote” Sweeney was the first of the nine finalists to dust off their stack. He crashed out after a clash with Juan Dominguez did not go to plan. Dominguez min-raised to 100,000 from early position, and Sweeney defended his big blind with a call. Sweeney check-called a 50,000-continuation bet on the deuce-five-ten flop, which showed two spades. The four of spades was greeted by checks from both players. An offsuit king completed the community cards, and Sweeney checked again. Dominguez set his Irish opponent all-in, and Sweeney called off his 491,861 stack with eight-seven of spades. Dominguez flipped over ace-five of spades for the nuts, and Sweeney was gone.
Markkos Ladev was the next player heading for the showers; he crashed out shortly after Sweeney. Ladev raised to 225,000 leaving himself only 126,675 behind, GoProWarrior flat-called in the small blind, and Astedt got out of the way in the big blind. GoProWarrior set Ladev all-in, and Ladev called. The Estonian’s pocket eights were ahead of GoProWarrior’s ace-nine, but that changed when an ace landed on the river.
Seventh place went to the dangerous Wiktor Malinowski, who started as one of the shorter stacks and never managed to improve his position. Malinowski bowed out during the 30,000/60,000/7,500a level. GoProWarrior raised to 144,000 from the cutoff, Astedt called on the button, only for Walinowski to squeeze all-in for 684,295 from the small blind. GoProWarrior ripped it in, and Astedt folded. It was pocket nines for Malinowski and ace-king for his Canadian opponent. An ace on the flop and another on the river sent Malinowski home.
The final five-figure score of the tournament went to Barak Wisbrod after a battle of the blinds with Joao Vieira. From the small blind, Vieira open-shoved for 642,212 effective, or eight big blinds, and Wisbrod made a stand with king-seven suited, only to discover he was behind Vieira’s ace-deuce. An ace on the flop put Wisbrod further behind although he did pick up a flush draw on the turn. A brick on the river reduced the player count by one.
Russia’s “Psychologist1” became the next victim of GoProWarrior. Earlier, Go ProWarrior doubled through Astedt with aces versus queens, and he found the pocket rockets again to send Psychologist1 home in fifth. GoProWarrior opened to 220,000 under the gun and snap-called when Psychologist1 jammed for 1,066,956 with pocket nines. The aces held and the GGPoker Super MILLION$ was down to four players.
Four became three with the untimely demise of Vieira. With blinds of 60,000/120,000/15,000a, Vieira open-jammed for 1,464,530 from under the gun with ace-king. GoProWarrior called from the small blind with a pair of nines in the hole, and those nines improved to a set on the turn.
GoProWarrior now held almost five times as many chips as his nearest rival, and it was now their tournament to lose. Their position became even healthier when they busted Dominguez in third. GoProWarrior opened three-times the big blind to 360,000 before calling Dominguez’s shove of 1,614,280. It was the king-trey of clubs for GoProWarrior and ace-four offsuit for Dominguez. The sun-running Canadian flopped a three and turned trips.
Astedt went into heads-up trailing 2,726,062 to 11,973,938, and it proved a bridge too far even for the great man. Astedt shoved for 1,649,562 (12 big blinds) with king-fives, and GoProWarrior instantly called with pocket eights. A five on the flop gave Astedt some hope, but he ultimately failed to melt GoProWarrior’s snowmen, and had to make do with a second-place finish.
